Jane Renner Hood

Jane Renner Hood became executive director of the NHC in 1987. Before that, she was associate director of the Illinois Humanities Council. She graduated cum laude from Doane College with a bachelor's in history and holds master's and doctorate degrees in European history from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She has taught history and American studies at UNL, Creighton University, and Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. She has written and spoken on educational reform, women in history, philanthropy and American life, and the humanities and public policy. Hood has served on the board of directors of the Chicago Women in Philanthropy, Illinois State Historical Society, Federation of State Humanities Councils, the Coordinating Commission for Postsecondary Education, Nebraska Public Radio Foundation, the Willa Cather Foundation, the Cooper Foundation, the E.N. Thompson Forum Program Committee, and is a member of Downtown Rotary and Round Table. She has one son and a granddaughter who live in Chicago.
