Nine communities in Nebraska were chosen to host “Barn Again! Celebrating an American Icon.”
Between November 2001 and September 2002, the traveling display and related activities visits Gering, McCook, Belvidere, Lincoln, Bassett, Broken Bow, Madison, Tekamah, Springfield and Grand Island. The traveling exhibit also is on display at the 2002 Nebraska State Fair.
An advisory committee consisting of representatives from the Nebraska Humanities Council, the Nebraska State Historical Society, the state Legislature, the State Fair Board, the 4-H organization and the Nebraska Soy Bean Board, selected the host communities from 45 applications.
Sites were chosen by geographic distribution and community programming suggestions, with preference given to previously underserved areas.
Each host community plans such barn-related events as living history exhibits, art and photography displays, local barn histories and educational programs with surrounding K-12 classes. The accompanying exhibit is freestanding in five sections. It features an architectural scale model of an English barn, examples of nails, roofing and a mortise and tenon joint.
