Youth Chautauqua
Youth Chautauqua featured in Crete
The Nebraska Humanities Council and Doane College hosted a Youth Chautauqua Camp July 12-17, during the weeklong Great Plains Chautauqua in Crete.
Students ages 11-14 attended and prepared a Chautauqua presentation. The NHC showcased the young Chautauquans at the Crete event and plans to feature them at other events later in the year.
All sixth- through eighth-grade students at Crete, Norris and Wilber-Clatonia schools were invited to submit applications to participate in the Youth Chautauqua, according to coordinator Sarah Brown of Crete, who teaches English at Wilber-Clatonia High School.
Sixteen youths were chosen from the three schools. They arrived at Doane College July 12 to meet with Brown and her staff, then went out to Tuxedo Park to help with the tent-raising.
Each youth participant researched a historical figure from the turn of the 20th century. The youth also participated in a series of seminars with the adult Chautauqua scholars. They wrote scripts and rehearsed portrayals of their chosen characters to prepare for performances July 17.
