Key Ingredients: America by Food

May 2005

"Key Ingredients" Nebraska tour

opened May 24 in Broken Bow

The 2005-2006 Nebraska tour of “Key Ingredients: America by Food,” a traveling exhibit developed by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibit Service and presented in the state by the Nebraska Humanities Council (NHC), opened May 24 in Broken Bow.

The exhibit, which toured six Nebraska sites, debuted at Custer County Historical Society Museum, 445 S. Ninth Ave. from May 24 to July 9. Each of the six sites developed public humanities programming coinciding with the exhibit’s theme and created events and activities to encourage public participation during the visit.

“Key Ingredients” explains the little known, the everyday, and the obvious through an entertaining and informative overview of our county’s diverse regional cooking and eating traditions. It underscores the contributions made by Native American cultures to our palate and eating habits, and addresses the entrepreneurial spirit on which many food production industries are based, such as the food pioneers Heinz, Campbell and Borden.

The “Key Ingredients” exhibit consists of an introduction and five content sections—“Land of Plenty,” “Local Flavors,” “Dynamic Delivery,” “Festival of Feasts,” and “Home Cooking.” Together, they investigate how climate, ethnicity, landscape and tradition influence the foods and flavors we enjoy nationwide.

From Broken Bow, the exhibit traveled to the Kimball Public Library in Kimball, where it was on display from July 14 to Aug. 28. Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center in Chadron hosted the exhibit from Sept. 2 to Oct. 17, before traveling to the Sturdevant-McKee Historic House Museum in Atkinson, where it stayed from Oct. 22 to Dec. 6.

The next stop was the Madison County Historical Society Museum in Madison for a visit Dec. 14 to Jan. 25. The tour ended with a stay at El Museo Latino in Omaha Jan. 30 to March 18.

Part of the SITES Museum on Main Street (MOMS) program, “Key Ingredients” is designed for rural audiences and small museums that do not have access to traveling exhibits because of space and cost limitations. The state tour was supported in part by The Nebraska Rural Radio Network—KRVN, KTIC and KNEB.

In 2003, the NHC brought the MOMS exhibit "Yesterday's Tomorrows: Past Visions of the American Future" to Nebraska for a statewide tour of six communities. In 2001-2002, the NHC brought "Barn Again! Celebrating an American Icon" to Nebraska for a tour of 10 communities and the Nebraska State Fair.
