Lewis & Clark Public Programs

Spring 2005

More communities chosen for

Lewis & Clark program series

In the second year of a Lewis and Clark bicentennial project called "Changed Lives: Lewis and Clark Meet the West," the Nebraska Humanities Council chose 15 small Nebraska communities within 100 miles of the Missouri River to host a series of programs in the spring, summer and fall.

The host communities are Odell, Beatrice, Genoa, Plattsmouth, Madison, Niobrara, Peru, Brownville, South Sioux City, Neligh, Gresham, Oakland, Pawnee City, Stromsburg and Bancroft.

Details for each community are listed below.

A sponsoring organization in each community will host a series of four weekly programs chosen from two themes: “Where Diverse Communities Intersect: Lewis and Clark Interact With America,” and “Navigating Our Passages.”

The programs are intended to include diverse perspectives of the historic Lewis and Clark Expedition, which led to a major transformation of the American landscape. This approach considers the native populations along the route equally significant as those who “discovered” their plants and animals for Western science.

The NHC is collaborating with the Missouri Humanities Council, who received a grant for the project through the National Endowment for the Humanities. Humanities councils in Kansas and Iowa also will participate.

Nebraska communities that host the programs will work with the NHC and the Missouri Humanities Council, who has hired a coordinator. Ten Nebraska communities already hosted these programs in 2004.
