Speakers Bureau

Policies

CATEGORY V:  Residencies

  • An organization that applies for a program must be a Nebraska not-for-profit organization or an educational institution.
  • Each organization and /or target audience is limited to two Speakers Bureau programs or events per calendar year. However, an organization may have one CATEGORY V program per calendar year in addition to a regular Speakers Bureau program.
  • Applications for a residency program must be received by the NHC no more than one year and no less than 60 days before the program date.
  • A residency is an in-depth program that addresses specific learning objectives.
  • These are three-hour to eight-hour programs depending upon the program and the learning objectives.
  • The processing fee is $50 per contact hour (for example, a four hour program would be $200) and must accompany the application form. Applications will NOT be processed without this fee.
  • Residency programs are designed to be presented to one audience (a speaker cannot be used as a scholar to conduct a series of short programs to multiple audiences).
  • Residencies are one-day programs. Note:  Under Capacity Building programs, an organization can have all three levels (Consultation, Planning, Training) on separate days. All three days can be three to eight hours, and will only count as one program.  An organization can also chose to have the three levels in one day, but the time cannot exceed eight hours.
  • While these are “pre-packaged” programs, they can be tailored somewhat for each audience.
  • Residencies require some preparation and follow-up on the part of the participants.
  • The project director must have developed a plan with the scholar before the application is submitted.
  • Scholars will send resource materials to the project director to help prepare the participants.
  • NHC Speakers Bureau programs may not be used as fundraisers.
  • NHC Speakers Bureau programs may not be used to promote particular political positions or points of view. All NHC programs must be balanced.
  • Admission fees may not be charged for NHC Speakers Bureau programs.
  • The project director must notify the NHC and the speaker of any changes as soon as possible.
  • Speakers Bureau final reports must be received by the NHC no more than 10 days after the program date.
  • The sponsoring organization must acknowledge NHC funding in all print materials, media interviews and at the beginning of each NHC Speakers Bureau program.
  • The NHC poster must be displayed at the location of the Speakers Bureau program and must be clearly visible.
  • The organization must fulfill all publicity requirements for the NHC Speakers Bureau program (the NHC will send the organization a publicity packet after the application form is processed).
  • The organization must pay the speaker(s) on the day of the program (the NHC processes checks on the 15th and 30th of each month). The organization must deposit the check and write the speaker a check from the organization for the same amount as the NHC check.
  • Contributions from individuals to support the programming of the Nebraska Humanities Council at the Speakers Bureau program should be returned with final report.
  • Individuals interested in making a gift at a later date should be encouraged to contact the NHC office directly.
  • The NHC requires a notice of cancellation of a program at least 15 days before the program, or the organization forfeits the processing fee.
  • If an organization fails to contact the speaker about the cancellation of a program, the organization is responsible for paying the speaker honorarium and travel cost in full.
  • Failure to comply with NHC Speakers Bureau policies can result in the organization not receiving future funding from the NHC.
